The History of Organizational Excellence
Organizational Excellence (OE) was launced in fall 2009 under the direction of Chancellor Linda Katehi. The Chancellor's goal for the department is to facilitate improvement in UC Davis' administrative processes, making them more "lean, effective, transparent, service-oriented and innovative." Karen Hull was the inaugural leader of Organizational Excellence, serving as its first associate vice chancellor while she simultaneously served as associate vice chancellor of Human Resources. Hull, a 24-year veteran of the UC Davis staff, built the original Organizational Excellence team to implement the administrative Shared Services Center. Her long-term strategy was to broaden the unit's impact across campus through providing organization development and business analysis expertise and support to administrative and academic units, at no cost to them. The OE team has been doing just that since its first project working to develop the Shared Services Center, which opened in February 2012.
Karen retired in June of 2014, leaving a legacy of operational improvements and change leadership. Stan Nosek, former Vice Chancellor of Administration, noted that "[during her tenure] Karen became the Office of Administration's 'go to' person for cultureand operational change challenges and ultimately became the UC Davis campus 'go to' change-leader as well."
OE Director, Lisa Terry, continues the legacy she helped Karen Hull build by leading a team that provides expert service delivery and support for campus and Medical Center change initiatives. We serve as a catalyst for positive change on campus, moving it toward a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. In addition to playing a key role in providing foundational support to the Shared Services Center, OE is currently providing OD and business process analysis support to all facets of the HR Transformation initiative launched in Fall, 2014. As resources allow, we continue to provide our services to academic and administrative units on campus, helping them ensure that changes they need or are planning are efficient, effective and serve their customers' needs.
