Interacting Effectively with International Students and Scholars

Participants in this course will learn the basics of intercultural communication in an international educational context.

Course Description

The course will include an introduction to intercultural communication theory and interactive exercises to help staff and faculty better understand the nature of cross cultural interactions.

By the end of this course, participants will have reviewed:

  • Basic theoretical models related to cross cultural communication as they relate to international students and scholars
  • Value patterns across cultures and how they affect the international student experience
  • Verbal and non-verbal communication styles across cultures
  • Identity change and adaptation theories for understanding the adaptation process of international students and scholars
  • Differences in academic environments across cultures
