Attending graduate school at UC Davis provides a wealth of opportunities for graduate students to engage in professional development opportunities outside of traditional classroom and research settings.  

UC Davis has a variety of programs that help promote success in graduate school and in preparation for the broad array of career opportunities that master’s and PhD students are seeking, yet this information is not always easy to assimilate or put into practice. 

In this course, we will explore the professional development needs of students at the various stages in their graduate careers (early, middle, and late) and identify resources that will help promote their success at each stage.  

Through a series of activities, including small group discussion and case studies, participants will explore ways to connect graduate students and their faculty mentors with targeted professional development resources.

Learning objectives:

• Obtain a working knowledge of the professional development programs available to UC Davis graduate students.
• Practice identifying specific professional development resources based on student’s individual needs and stage in program.
• Use open questions and case studies to understand suitable strategies to ensure all individual student’s needs are met.
