If you are being followed, here are some tips to keep you safe.

It is now December, and it has started to get darker earlier.  Because of this, you must be more aware of your surroundings.  If you are walking by yourself, make sure to eliminate any distractions so that you make it to your final destination with no safety concerns.  However, if you happen to notice that you are being followed, here are some things you should do.

1) Keep calm: It’s easy to become flustered in a situation like this, however, try to stay calm and assess the situation.  Who is else is around and is there anyone you could ask for help?  Take some deep breaths and plan your next move strategically.

2) Pay attention to your surroundings: It’s so easy to get caught up in our normal routine and not notice small details.  When someone is following you, it’s even more important to keep your eyes focused on what is going on around you.  If possible, make a couple wrong turns to see if you continue to be followed.

3) Break out your phone and call the police: If you continue to be followed, contact UCDPD or call 911 or 4-2555 from your cell phone depending on your physical location. It’s better to get help sooner rather than later.
