Gunrock's Office, the Infamous Clue

The Offices of the Chancellor and Provost (OCP) Scavenger Hunt in May proved to be more than just a friendly competition. It became a week long celebration of curiosity, teamwork and the collaborative culture that employees consistently value.

In the recent Employee Experience Survey, one of OCP's highest rated strengths was that employees enjoy working with their coworkers. The scavenger hunt brought that strength to life by giving colleagues the opportunity to connect, problem solve and explore OCP together.

A Scavenger Hunt Designed for Flexibility

Designed to fit the varying flexible work arrangements offered across OCP, the event gave teams the freedom to participate on their own schedules while still sharing in the collective excitement.

Seven teams of three to five people took on the challenge, exploring corners of campus and off campus that many had never visited.

Many of the participants admitted they were surprised to discover how many different units fall under OCP. The event became an unexpected tour of OCP's reach and diversity" Myrene Abot, JD, Executive Officer for the Offices of the Chancellor and Provost

Discovering Hidden Corners of OCP

The most infamous clue of the week was finding Gunrock's "office." Teams puzzled over it, retraced their steps and debated whether it was a trick. Those who finally uncovered the answer were rewarded with a burst of laughter. Gunrock's "office" is actually a miniature workspace tucked inside the Finance, Operations and Human Resources area, a tiny, charming setup that instantly became the highlight of the hunt.

Building Connections Through Friendly Competition

In true OCP spirit, the event was also intentionally frugal. The final stop was Thank Goodness for Staff, allowing teams to wrap up the hunt without the need to fund a separate venue or food. Even the prizes reflected OCP's resourcefulness, with swag donated from various OCP departments that turned the celebration into a shared contribution rather than an added expense.

By the end of the week, participants walked away with new knowledge, new stories and a renewed sense of connection to the people and places that make OCP what it is. It was a simple idea that sparked genuine joy and reinforced the collaborative culture that employees value. The scavenger hunt is one example of how OCP departments are investing in employee engagement by creating opportunities for colleagues to connect, collaborate and contribute to a positive employee experience across UC Davis.
