Workplace Violence Prevention: 3 Things Managers Can Do This Month
The Workplace Violence Prevention (WPVP) team at UC Davis Health believes that managers play an important role in maintaining a safe work environment. WPVP partners with managers to assist their teams in recognizing early warning signs of violence, responding to escalating behaviors, and connecting staff members with supportive resources.
Here are three simple actions managers can take to further support staff:
1. Start the conversation with your team
- A quick check-in during a staff meeting can reinforce awareness. Try something simple like: "If you notice a situation escalating, please let me know so we can connect you with the right support."
2. Encourage staff to build their skills
- Share information for trainings through UC Learning including CPI Virtual Verbal De-Escalation and Mental Health First Aid. These courses provide strategies for recognizing escalation and responding safely in emotionally charged interactions.
3. Connect with the WPVP team
- In addition to training, the WPVP team provides managerial consultations, departmental threat assessments, and post-incident support to help departments strengthen workplace safety.

In recognition of Workplace Violence Awareness Month, WPVP will be visiting units throughout the month of April to share resources and connect with staff members. Managers and staff are encouraged to ask questions and learn more about available support offered by Workplace Violence Prevention.
